Gotham knights kind of has a rep for being DC's worst game, and its especially apparent when you compare it to the arkham trilogy (which is just unfair cause we all know the Arkham Trilogy is never going to be dethroned as DC's best game). I dont think I've ever met someone who honestly loves gotham knights as much as I do, or at least to the degree where you could tell they are an honest fan who genuinely does enjoy the game. Everyone talks shit about this game, which makes me sad, because its my favorite game. Is it the best game I've ever played? No. God no. But its the game I somehow find myself always returning to, always coming back for more, spending hours upon hours just choking enemies with Dick Grayson's gloriously thick thighs, because its so, so fun.
heres a list of the pros and cons: pros
- omg!! batfamily!!
- satisfying fighting gameplay
- nice solo character storylines that occasionally tackle topics not commonly talked about in terms of their character (in this case being tim and jason)
- addicting. vrey, very addicting
- lgbtq rep cons
- late game enemies aren't hard, just have a lot of hp
- some aspects of the game get repetetive and boring
- plot is lackluster and doesnt stick
I have issues with gotham knights that ill get into later, but my main gripe with it is that this game had the potential to be something insane, and it just didn’t fully deliver on it. Do you understand how much the people wanted games with Batmans kids in it after the Arkham Knight's DLCs? So when I finally bought Gotham Knights (on a 90% sale!) I expected something great. Or for at least the fighting style to be good, since that was a lot of people's favorite part about the Arkham Games. But it wasn't, because this isn't an Arkham game, and I think thats why a lot of people were first dissapointed when they played Gotham Knights. Which is fair, but at the same time I think GK just gets a LOT of unnecessary hate. You gotta understand that GK isn't trying to be an Arkham game, it doesn't even play like one at all. Gotham Knights is really fun, especially in co-op! Hands down onbae of the best superhero co-op experiences.
The combat gets fun, especially when you unlock all the abilities and the skill trees. The most fun I had was fighting with Nightwing, and the most efficient one was probably Barbara's. Jason's playstyle is for someone who loves a good heavy hitter and ranged fighter, and Tim's isnt really anything special, but I somehow find his attacks the most satisfying. I dont know.
But anyway, the fighting did feel a little clunky at times. Late game enemies just become damage sponges. They don't become hard, just very annoying and frustrating. The open world combat can get repetitive.Another thing I have with Gotham Knights is that the story isn't anything good. Bad? No, not really. It was sort of just..,, meh. It's nothing special. My dad told me "Why wouldn't Batman know about a lazarus pit that was directly under where he operated." which is a pretty valid point, and it was kinda all I thought about for the rest of that playthough.
The collectibles arent bad, just a bit boring and annoying to get through. I had to watch a guide for over half of them, but i still had lots of fun. Finding batarangs scattered across the city was always so rewarding, and the in-lore reason for them being there made me a little sad. Historie Strigidae is a bitch tho.
The solo stories (i forgot what its called in-game) also get a lot of hate for the drama being very teen-like, and I think its a valid critique but I'm honestly just glad we finally got some Jason content that actually addressed his lazarus pit trauma. We finally got a game that addressed Tim Drake's bisexuality. We got some Jason and Dick bonding scenes, and Barbara got a moment with her dad. Also we got Bruce dancing in his undies. We finally, FINALLY, got a game where Batman's kids are front and center. Its all I've ever wanted. So I of all people will never be able to fully say that the game is bad. All of those negative points are not enough to drag me out of the fun I'm having. A lot of people don't give it the chance it deserves as evident in the fact that only 50% of players actually finished the first case file. Which makes me sad, because once I learned to love Gotham Knights, I kept loving it for a long time.
I would also like to mention the fact that they let Bruce die. Not a lot of things can kill that man, but they did it in a way that honored him.
What a shame that epic games is a BITHC and has SO MANY LAUNCHIGN ISSUES. I CANT EVER OPEN GOTHAM KNIGHTS AGAIN.
TL;DR: Fun if you seperate it from the arkham games but be careful about your playstyle and harder enemies, it gets frustrating. Like, really frustrating. Plot is decent at best. Bruce dances in his underwear and Dick scares Jason by pretending to fall off a roof only for Jason to turn around and see Dick doing a handstand.
